This book is a wide-ranging, if not very deep, examination of photography of the night skies.The book begins with a brief look at the equipment necessary for photographing the night sky. There are basic tips on exposure and focus, as well an explanation about how to plan the night shoot. This includes use of several of the specialized landscape and astronomy apps. A section is then devoted to capturing special compositions, including things like star trails and basic information on processing these images in Lightroom and Photoshop. The final section deals with creating time-lapse videos, including references to software like LRTimelapse and qDSLR. I was particularly pleased to see a discussion of the use of sliders for time-lapse, although I would have liked more insight, particularly with regard to composition.Every important subject is mentioned but I kept wishing there had been more information. In the equipment area, for example, a single mention is made of battery-operated lens heaters. A night next to a lake, and another where the temperature dropped more than 15 degrees between sunset and later evening, both of which covered my lens with moisture, showed me the necessity of learning about these devices before assaying a shoot. Another example is the apps that allow you to see the night sky well before the shoot so you will have an idea of, say, where the Milky Way will appear, so that you can set up well in advance. But the set up, particularly in the case of time lapse images, had better be accurate and that requires knowing the compass bearing along which to aim. Which of the apps will provide this information, and how to use your compass, including the adjustment for true north, is not explored.As seems appropriate for a subject that will appeal primarily to more experienced photographers, there is little discussion of basic ideas like exposure and focus. Even when the author mentions subjects like the use of Lightroom for creating panoramas, he only discusses a few of the commands for specialized applications.I had a particular bone to pick with the layout of the book. The volume is well illustrated with images. However, few are on the same page as the material referencing them or even across the gutter, but at the very least on an overleaf or even several pages away. That kind of layout discourages people from looking at the images.Everything about photography of the stars is mentioned here. Unfortunately it’s in the form of a survey course, and one will have to do a lot more reading and experimenting to make full use of the ideas.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

This is the book to buy to learn the essential elements of night photography and how to set your camera to the right night focus, the right ISO, aperture, and speed. If you have ever held an interest in the stars, the constellations and the planets and galaxies and how to recognize them and plan to photograph them I highly recommend this book!
