Five stars!! After reading (and loving!) The Slope Rules, I was eager to read The Trail Rules - and it didn't disappoint! Here's what I loved most about it:1. The mountain biking! The main character is learning how to mountain bike during the book, and I just loved the way the mountain biking details brought the story to life. Plus, her growth as a person paralleled her confidence and skill with the sport, which felt very true-to-life. I love seeing heroines tackling sports that aren't the norm, and this definitely fits the bill. Perfect!2. The book deals with a tricky emotional situation (no spoilers!) that I haven't seen in a lot of YA books. I won't share more because I don't want to ruin it, but I loved seeing the topic addressed. It was done really well.3. Everything! The story touches on romance, relationships, best friends, expectations (from parents, school...) -- all tied together with great writing.I enjoyed The Trail Rules so much! Now I'm looking forward to the next book in the series! :)I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.
This is the book I wish was around when I was 17. While I wasn't a "reformed mean girl", I struggled in high school to just feel confident in my own skin. I admit things are so much different today than they were when I was a junior, but common themes are still there: the need to belong....to need to be liked....to be confident....to know that we all make mistakes and they aren't the end of the world. What I love about this story is that it isn't your typical coming of age story that use the same ol' cliches and tropes. Nope. This story centers around the sport of extreme mountain biking--something that Mike (our female MC) took up as a way to spend time with her boyfriend, and in turn, really loving the sport. Through her desire to challenge herself and try new things (and even swim against the stream), which allowed her to find her true self. The characters are genuine with real life situations, conversations and experiences that are written well and keep the pages turning!
I enjoyed this book so much!!! I used to ride my bike all the time on trails and this brought back so many great memories! (also made me realize how much I miss riding with my friends!)Mike is great!! I loved how she kept challenging herself and even as her confidence grew, she still had a lot of insecurities - that overcoming one thing didn't magically fix everything else. So many stories play into that trope and this one does not.Watching Mike grow and learn about herself as she entered her junior year with things so different than what she was used to felt so real. I think that is one of the things I liked most about this book - it just felt real - that if I were to walk into a high school today, I'd meet kids like Mike and her friends, hear conversations like they had.If you are looking for a great YA contemporary that has real characters, is a 'happily ever after' but also realistic, this is for you! Plus there is mountain biking - something you rarely come across in stories!
So why can't a 60-something grandmother put this book down? Because the characters are fun, true to life, and the plot keeps you interested. A fun read! Can't wait for the 3rd in the series!
So cute, reads easily and a fun story to follow along to. I liked how she used characters from The Slope Rules and we got to know Mike better. The Trail Rules did not disappoint. I love having a book that both my teen and myself enjoy reading.
I really enjoyed reading this and didn't want to put it down. I liked following Mike's journey. I can't wait for the third one.
This book was so much fun. It was a pleasure riding a long with Mike as she came into her own.
Mikayla (Mike) has finally got everything she thought she wanted. She has distanced herself from the snow bunnies aka mean girls. She is back with her ex-boyfriend, Evan and she has some new friends. She has started cycling and is really enjoying the challenge but Evan her BF is a little too protective of her. As the new school year starts she finds everyone's expectations of her are overbearing. Her parents want her to focus on her education. Her boyfriend wants her to be the perfect girlfriend. Her old friends are acting strangely towards her. Mike tries to please everyone but something has to give. She meets some new friends while out on a cycle trail. They don't go to her school and they aren't entangled in her life. Mike finds the step back refreshing and helps her focus on more than what others want. One of her new friends is a guy called Mica and Mike can't help but compare him to Evan. Even though Mike was desperate to get back with Evan most ex's have that title for a reason. Mica shows her that Evan might not be everything she needs.I would say this is more a becoming of age book than a romance. Don't get me wrong it is a love story with a happy ever after but I felt Mike could easily have any guy she wanted.I didn't really like Evan and I'm not sure if this was intentional by the author but I couldn't wait for her to get rid of him. He was controlling and condescending. I haven't read the first book and I did wonder if I would have liked him more if I had. This is a standalone story, however, I did feel certain aspects would have made more sense if I had read Cally (Mike's BFF) story.Overall I enjoyed The Trail Rules. It's the first mountain bike story I've read and Mike was an interesting character. Her conflict between doing what she wanted and what others expected made for an interesting story. Mica was an ok love interest and the author tried to show an intense attraction but I felt we didn't really find out enough about him. This story was more about new beginnings, breaking free and discovering it isn't as scary as you thought.4 stars out of 5.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
