Some of the articles are absolutely fascinating - I have learned so much already. You can learn more about engines and motorcycles in general from this than many technical books that purport to teach you but are not written well. It's a great inside look at racing as well. I've read about 2/3 of this so far and the writing seems to get better / more clear / easier to follow the further you get (I presume due to his experience writing as it is chronological). Cameron cuts past common misunderstandings that armchair mechanics and racers (and even experienced but unfortunately ignorant amateur racers) repeat over and over like gospel. Not to mention the majority of bikers of all types that blather on authoritatively as if they know something. There is too much repeating of old baseless hearsay about how to get more power or ride fast. Read this and some fact-based tech books and engage your brain to free yourself from the glut of ignorance out there. Sorry about the soapbox. Well worth it.

Top Dead Center 1I found that TDC 1 was centrally focused on much older stories, mainly several decades back. The more recent articles were focused about 10 years back. One piece was particularly amusing as it heralded how Rossi and Burgess were able to fix the Yamaha after 10 seconds, and how Rossi is so capable at developing race bikes. It was amusing and interesting because I read this piece just as they are now indicating how Yamaha had already developed a good race bike for and that Rossi merely chose the correct one to use. They are also explaining now that Stoner had to contend with the atrocious amount of understeer from the Desmosedici while fending off Rossi, and even Rossi himself commented that whatever they paid Stoner wasn't enough. Many of the other articles are fairly dry, and because I grew up in a much later generation and because I did not follow Grand Prix racing or motorcycle development until they started introducing fuel injection into production bikes, much of it goes over my head or I am not interested. I purchased TDC1 because James May indicated that the Kevin Cameron books were among his favorites on the topic of motorcycles.It took me quite a long time to read because I found it difficult to continue since I could not relate to many of the articles that focused on past racing stars or bikes from decades ago.Overall: 4/5 stars, the articles are very dated, some of it is dry. TDC is perfect for those that want a sense of nostalgia in motorcycle development and racing.

Most people mistakenly think that to make a motorcycle fast they only need to install a hot cam and slip on a noisy exhaust. Kevin knows better because he has explored all the slippery details on race tracks around the world. A larger carburetor will slow down the velocity of the air/fuel mixture and disrupt the proper mixing causing less, not more, power. It's Bernoulli's principle and Kevin doesn't just know it, he understands it.What's great about this book is that he explains this sort of thing as if he were having a conversation with you. He tells you about these things in the context of the people and machines he worked and raced with. And at the end of each story you understand it to.Kevin's Handbook of Sportbike Performance is much more technical and makes an excellent companion book. Handbook tells you what to do and which bolt to turn. TDC tells you why you want to do it and gets you excited about doing it. Every rider who is interested in performance; the people, the machines, and the techniques, should own this book!

Cameron is a genius, with a gift for communicating his thoughts to the rest of us mechanical idiots in such a way that he makes us feel as though we might actually have learned something. A great read for the mechanically inquisitive with an interest in motorcycles and/or internal combustion.

Kevin Cameron writes in a uniquely odd manner but if you're a gear head or just interested in learning WHY some stuff gets done, eventually, you'll like the book. I had been reading his stuff in magazines for a long time and wondered when an all encompassing compendium of his work might surface. This would be it. Can you read the whole thing at once? I doubt it. It's not that kind of book. You need to read it, attempt to understand what he just said, and then move on. Can't do that in one sitting for sure. Overall, I enjoyed the read as much as the "ride" it takes you on. AD

Yup, I struggled for years when I was younger finding good tech info, why my bikes had the problems they did and the inside story on how motorcycles developed. I didn't know about Kevin beavering away writing his column for Cycle World.If you're into the technical side of motorcycles or any vehicles, just go get both of these books, theres a 1 and a 2 .There is no finer explanation of how things work available on this planet.

Kevin Cameron has the correct word usage to transport the reader to become part of the scene , to feel the sweat on your neck from the sun as you stand in the pits next to the track, to smell the tar oder floating in from the track along with gas and oil smells. Yep, he puts you right there plus it is like he is talking directly to you about the problem he happens to be dealing with at the moment, Great book, great writer. I have nerver met this man nor do I know him other than what he has written Cycle World magizine but I will buy what ever he writes, he is that good,
