Coined a new word.I began reading this work 35yrs ago, life got in the way, and I could not find it anywhere.I looked for years, but I'd forgotten the author's name.It appeared on my reading recommends- I am ELATED, it is Awesome, and I reserve that WORD for Yahuah Yahusha and all pertaining to Him exclusively.His writing is poetic, precise.

A TRIP BACK IN TIME! Meticulously researched and presented. The information is arranged to make each aspect of life in Jesus' time interesting and understandable. Edersheim is a first class scholar and writer. I highly recommend this book and others by this author.

I seldom do 5 stars but this writing has totally captured my interest, I read and re-read, it has done so much to bring me closer to Israel, when combined with some other Messianic Jewish authors it witnesses so powerful to life at the time Jesus lived in Israel.

This book is very informative. There is a deeper understanding for many biblical passages when the mindset of the people of that time is explained, from understanding the relationship between Jews and Gentiles to the synagogue and worship.

This book is well written and provides an explanation of Jewish theology and thought as it contrasts with contemporary Christian teaching. It presents this contrast with clarity to an inexperienced reader of theology.

Not an easy read but absolutely fascinating. If you can read academic journals you won't have any problem with this but it is not abook you can skim. You have to read it sentence by sentence.

Alfred Edersheim is a very learned scholar, yet this book is not difficult to read. He lived in the 1800's, but it reads like it could be written today. He performed extensive research and relates his comments to biblical texts, as well as using other sources to articulate what life was like in New Testament times. It helps me to better understand the Bible as I learn about the people Jesus was ministering to. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I teach "Manners and Customs of the Bible" at a branch of International Bible University and use this book as my text.
