The story of a woman’s unexpected journey and discovery of her family’s past. The alternating stories move back and forth in time from 1938, Austria, under German occupation, to 1989, California. The novel takes place during the reunification of East and West Germany, is often melodramatic and repetitive in style, but offers a wartime love story with a background of historical content. For young adults.Katie Nelson cares for her father who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. To help combat the expense, Katie requests an appraisal of her father’s prized stamp collection. Philatelist, Ben Grossman, while accessing the collection, discovers an unusual stamp from Austria in the 1930’s.Katie and Ben begin to investigate the origins of the stamp. Katie, though Jewish, has little tie to her Jewish roots. The curious discovery leads Katie on an unexpected journey into her family’s past as she and Ben travel to Europe to unravel the tale. A slow relationship develops between Katie who is on the verge of an unwanted divorce and Ben, who suffers over the loss of his wife.In a specious vein, Cantor advances unnecessary sensationalism stating that Hohenschonhausen prison camp in the GDR was worse than Auschwitz death camp, in Poland. Over one million people were murdered in Auschwitz. Hohenschonhausen was a prison in the GDR, controlled by the East German Government and the Stasi, State Security Service. Some 250,000 East Germans, political opponents of the government, were sent to the prison who were then processed to other prisons; an estimated that some 20,000 prisoners died in Hohenschonhausen, facts the author should know.

This complex and beautifully written novel takes us from 1938 in Austria at the time of the Anschluss, or Nazi takeover of Austria, to America and Germany in 1991, with a few additional side trips. A young man, a trainee of a master stamp engraver, is separated from the Jewish woman he loves and the rest of her family. Kate, a young woman in 1989 Los Angeles, takes the stamp collection of her father, who has dementia, to be appraised. The stamp, on an unmailed letter from 1939, on which the appraiser focuses, leads Kate on an emotional and physical journey to find the secret of who designed the stamp, the relationship between the sender, the stamp artist, and the intended recipient. This brief description cannot do justice to the delicately woven story, as Cantor takes us from past to near-present, and back again, slowly unraveling the threads of the story and in the end, tying the loose ends together brilliantly. I'm afraid to say more for fear of saying too much. Do not miss this book. I loved it.

If I could stand up and applaud for this book, I would. I loved the way the author wove the past and the present (although in the late 1980s) together, with surprise twists and excellent character development. An added bonus was learning about philately, and in a way that drew me right in. I had no idea how stamps used to be made, and how they played a part in history. This book is also appealing when you think about aging parents, doing what makes you happy, Alzheimer's, and family. All I can say is if you like historical fiction, if you enjoy reading about WW II, you must put this on your reading list.

A beautiful fast moving story that goes between 1938 Austria and 1989 the United States. The characters, the story line were well developed. I barely put the book down. A special read! For fans of readers who enjoy the story line set against WW2

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction. I heard about this book and pre-ordered it before the release date and the book showed up promptly from Amazon on the release date. I started reading the book later that day and could not put the book down. The book draws you in from the first chapter! I cannot say enough good things about this book. I keep thinking about parts of this book weeks later after finishing it (which to me is a true sign of a great book!!!). This book has even inspired me to look into how I could collect stamps. This book is a must read for all!!

I knew nothing about stamps and not much about the resistance fought so bravely during the war. This book brings an important part of our Jewish history to life and let’s the reader experience so vividly through the eyes of people living it. So well written! I appreciate the detail and hard work on background research by the author. I especially appreciate the positive forward looking approach.

This was a very special novel with rich character development. I couldn't put the book down reading until 3 am. A sensational story of memory, wartime injustice and unwavering love. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed the read, I loved the parts that took place in Austria. The history and the mystery were the best angles in this book. The romance was sluggish. I would recommend this book to anyone who is pretty fast reader and loves WWII history.
