I have read all of the books in the series and have loved them all until this one. I read to be entertained and I did not want to read about the rehash of the political problems. I realize that that was part of the times but lets face it this is fiction. Couldn't really enjoy the book as it kept jumping to the politics.
I have read all the books in this series and enjoyed them all, including this one. This one was just not as enjoyable. This installment has too many depressing stories in it. From the Troubles, to Dr. Laverty's fertility issues, to Donal's fire, to Bertie's cancer scare, it's just too much.I understand the author's contrast between the "pull together" residents of Ballybucklebow and the broader conflicts of Northern Ireland, but that's not why we are here. Fingal is a kindhearted bull of a man, Kinky is sweet and funny like Aunt Bee in Mayberry, Donal is bumbling comic relief, and Laverty is the young educated new-comer learning life's lessons from the lives of the locals. We buy the books for an annual visit with those characters.I understand and appreciate Patrick Taylor's efforts to address the issues of the time, and he even recognizes and addresses the new direction this volume takes in his introduction. It's a mistake though. The "Irish Country" series is an escape to a place that no longer exists, if it ever did. We don't want the intrusions of real life here. We can find those elsewhere. The author had founded a delightful, funny, safe, little community., which was wonderful to visit once a year or so. It doesn't need to change or grow. Keep it as it is. The charm of the series will be lost if it heads off into this 'real life' direction.
I have read most of Mr. Taylor's books - this one was not appealing due to so much emphasis on conflict in Ireland. I did not finish it. I hope the next one is better.
i have read all the books in this series. The ones that focus on Fingal are great, others that feature Dr. Laverty were mediocre but tolerable. This one is DREADFUL. I cannot stand the Barry Laverty character. Unfortunately, he is featured prominently in this book. Also, I did not appreciate the lectures on gynecology and fertility (yuck) and the political situation in the late 1960’s in Northern Ireland. It’s over, and these characters played no role in the turmoil. Finally, it is obvious the author has run out of ideas. Don’t waste your money on this one.
I can't help but to agree with those who dislike the political views inserted into this book. I understand this was what was happening at the time setting of the book, but enough is enough. If I want to read about "the troubles" in Ireland at that time, I'll but a history book !
I have really enjoyed this terrific Irish series and the adventures of the people of Ballybuckleboo but I think the author has lost his way after 13 books. As a male writer, the professions of love by the doctors to their respective wives rang hollow and the political scene while relevant overwhelmed the book. The best part of the book was Donal and his travails after his house burns down and would love to hear more about, the Marquis, his estate and the failed romance between his sister and Dr. O'Reilly's brother, Lars.
I have read every book in this series, and have really enjoyed them all. Watching the characters grow and change over time along with times in these books has been fun. They start to feel like old friends. The use of Irish slang and phrases and great descriptions of the areas involved in the story makes you feel like you're right there in Ireland. Highly recommended this book and all the books in the series. Looking forward to book 14.
A great read as usual and am looking forward to the continuation of Dr. Barry and Sue’s pregnancy dilemma...and to success! As usual, I could have read twice as much about the people of Balleybucklboo or whatever the name is! The author has an expressive way about how the community love one another through ‘thick or thin’ times.
