Review
"Ian Schrager, the former co-owner of Studio 54, collects photographs and stories from the nightclub's heyday in the late 1970s and '80s in this glitzy, celebrity-filled coffee-table book that will fill any giftee with awe and nostalgia."—The New York Times, Holiday Gift Guide"... spectacular volume containing a treasure trove of the era’s glam."—Society Diaries"On the timeline of New York nightlife, the heyday of Studio 54 barely registers as a blip. Just three years separate the club’s celeb-mobbed 1977 opening and the raucous “going-away party” that proprietors Ian Schrager and the late Steve Rubell hosted before being carted off to jail for tax evasion. But in the four decades since that famous coke-snorting crescent moon first rose over the dance floor, no other nightclub has made quite as indelible an impression on the city’s social scene. From 10 p.m. until sunrise, A-list movie stars mingled with drag queens on roller skates, Park Avenue swans had (pre-AIDS-crisis) bathroom sex with downtown artists, and some of the 20th-century’s greatest literary lights watched it all from the infamous banquettes. Now, thanks to a new book, those who never made it past the velvet ropes—or are too young to have even tried—have a window into that wild-and-crazy magic. Studio 54 (Rizzoli), edited by Schrager, now impresario of a slew of hotels including the new Public Hotel, is equal parts oral history, personal scrapbook, and photo album, bringing together the reminiscences of regulars with star-studded snapshots and reams of gossip columns. Schrager, it seems, saved everything."—W Magazine.com"Ian Schrager looks back at the legendary club that he and Steve Rubell started in 1977, with vintage photos of the stars and personalities who walked through its doors."—WSJ. Magazine"Schrager is releasing Studio 54, featuring hundreds of photos from the club's heyday, many of them from his personal albums: Michael Jackson and David Bowie, presidential families and news anchors, the SNL crew, Diana Ross, Tennessee Williams, Halston, Roy Cohn, Richard Pryor, Vladimir Horowitz—a fairly broad representation of American achievement, and not a handler or cell-phone camera in sight. "—Esquire"To say that Studio 54 was the place to be, may in fact be the understatement of the last four decades. To celebrate the nightclub’s 40th anniversary this year, co-founder Ian Schrager looks back to the Studio’s history with a new coffee table book, out now, and an upcoming documentary to be released at the end of the year."—Refinery29.com"Legendary luxury hotelier Ian Schraeger, co-owner of Studio 54, has put together the ultimate illustrated memoir in the long-awaited magnum opus Studio 54 (Rizzoli New York). The book is the perfect mélange of photographs and press clips, memories of New York when nightlife was at its peak. But it’s more than a who’s who of the jet set—it is the ultimate guide to vintage style, from Valentino to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith."—Crave Online"In Ian Schrager’s new book, Studio 54, the club owner pulls back the velvet rope to capture the power, pleasure, and people at the greatest nightclub of all time."—Vanity Fair"The iconic disco club that defined an era comes alive again in this sizable memory-capsule by and on the legendary co-founder, Ian Schrager through spectacular photographs (some never before seen) featuring the likes of Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Warren Beatty, Diana Ross and Andy Warhol. The More than just nostalgia, this is unfettered access past the velvet rope and into a unique world where celebrities and regulars partied together, epitomizing decadence and most importantly, having fun."—IndulgeMagazine.com

Sooooo good, you have to have it! It seems like everything that could ever be said about Studio 54 has already been said again and again, which begs the question: does the world (and your bookshelf) really need another book about the legendary disco? The answer is 100% YES, you need THIS Studio 54 book! First of all, the book is beautiful, oversized in black satin with the silver and gold Studio 54 logo on the cover, with the title and author blind embossed on the spine (pairs perfectly with the Andy Warhol: Polaroids XL book) and is the ideal design for the content. Secondly, the inside does not disappoint. Tons of photos of the glamorous patrons, as expected, but also behind the scenes photos of club itself in many stages of design, and facsimiles of Schrager's personal scrapbook of Studio 54. Lastly, Ian Schrager is the ultimate insider to retell the often told story of Studio 54. You get a peek behind the curtain to the see the celebrated early work of a man who wasn't just a one hit wonder with Studio 54, but a hospitality genius.
I am mesmerized by this book! Besides the amazing pictures, I love the actual clippings, headlines and references to what was going on outside Studio 54 that all seem vaguely familiar to my post-seventies haze. This book far exceeds the high expectations I had for it!Many thanks to Mr. Schrager! Kt
2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of Studio 54, probably the greatest of discos. Ian Schrager, one of the three co-owners, has just put out this volume. I have followed the history of Studio 54 from a Vanity Fair piece by Andy Warhol associate Bob Colacello, a History Channel documentary, and other material about the 1970's so it was no surprise I'd want to read Schrager's book. While not a night life person, I do enjoy a tale of high decadence. The book is not a terrible one, but if you are expecting an in-depth look at Studio 54's rise and fall as told by one of its leading members, you will be disappointed. The book is more a celebratory remembrance, recalling the good times and glossing over some of the uglier incidents. Schager kept scrapbooks and reproduces pages of news bits about the glory days of Studio 54. There are great photos of the famous and the lesser known but spectacular denizens. If you want to experience nostalgia or a wish you could have been there, this book will succeed. I suppose I should caution potential buyers by noting that they will be paying a lot for what amounts to the deluxe edition of Ian Schrager's scrapbook. Still, at least Schrager was part of something that was very fascinating, even four decades later. 10/20/17 CORRECTION: I wrote of a "History Channel documentary". I just came across my old videotape of the show and found that in fact, it was an episode of the "E! True Hollywood Story".
First thing I thought when I received this, wow! It's much bigger than I thought. Second thing was damn, this is a beautiful book. The quality of the pages and especially the cover blew me away. A must have for someone interested in Studio 54 or even just a fan of the 70s. For 50 bucks this is a steal.
This book was on sale and I question if that is because it is of inferior quality. The cover is warped and it curves upward. The gold printing on the cover logo is uneven and flawed. I would not have bought it in the store had I seen these flaws in person.Regarding the contents - the focus is mostly on large photos of celebrities and the newspaper articles that mentioned them at Studio.
Excellent compilation of one of the most amazing social phenomena of the late 70s! I lived it, went to Studio almost weekly, and it was spot on.
What’s good about this book is that it doesn’t elaborate on the downfall and the actions that closed its doors. It’s more of a tale of how to businessmen came together hired a crew and transformed an old cbs movie studio into what is considered the greatest night club that ever was and will be. Fronted by an interview with Ian schraeger, the book quickly moves into the details of getting the club up and running from the ground up, the costs the struggles, the interior design(even the blu prints and complete club layout are present. As you progress, mr schraeger treats you to photos and tidbits-including some funny stories with the thousands of celebrities that graced the dance floor. Even the remodeling in 1979 which changed the layout of the club, the tome even includes numerous news paper clippings from the years it was open , creating an ambience as if your in that era. The photos are huge, and when viewing you feel as if your sucked right in through the doors, and straight into the flashing lights, and loud sound system which is also described in detail here along with the dj booth- and yes there’s even song and guest lists. This book is the best way to visualize and experience the grand studio that no longer exists.Just one thing . This book is heavy an will require effort to lift so my recommendation is to lay it flat then just let yourself be drawn back to 1977-and the years that followed.Highly recommended.
An absolutely stunning chronicle on Studio 54 and the disco years, as told by the man who should know, co-owner Ian Shrager.Gorgeous photographs, including candid and often scandoulous shots of well-known celebrities visiting one of the most famous dance clubs in the world. Witness OJ, before the trial of the century... Michael, before he turned white... and Bruce before donning a skirt! It's all here. Along with a fascinating look at the history of the club and the political and social climate of the time, as presented in news clippings, promos, and commercial advertisements.Don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of legendary history!
