Excellent reference book for anyone looking to learn about/do research in atmospheric science or habitability. While the book has detailed discussions on many topics, the authors do a great job providing thorough explanations that are approachable for someone knew to the subject. The extensive reference list is very helpful when looking to delve further into a particular topic discussed in the book.I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in atmospheric processes and habitability.

Full disclosure: I received a free inspection copy of this book.I was delighted when this book was published - it is the first thorough textbook in planetary habitability. This book has clear derivations of the key formulae, and good warnings on approximations. The discussion throughout is rich, readable and rewarding (the reference list is ~100 pages long). Overall it is too detailed to be used as the sole textbook for a grad course, but I am using selections from this book as part of the required reading for a grad-level course in planetary habitability at the University of Chicago. For researchers in the field, this is a required reference - analogous to de Pater and Lissauer for planetary scientists. The book is both broad and thorough, emphasizing solar system data but with an eye to exoplanet-relevant processes throughout. I was particularly impressed that the authors' presentation is balanced between historical science (what happened and why on particular planets/moons) and basic physics and chemistry (which should be generalizable to all planets). This is a contrast with earlier (1980s) texts which emphasized either planetary history or atmospheric physics/chemistry but not both. As might be expected given the research interests of the authors, the influence of geodynamics, planet formation, and planetary interiors on atmospheric evolution does not receive a detailed treatment. However, the literature on these questions does not really exist yet. This is a young field, and there is a lot of work to be done!
